Susan Bretney Yost Bergner

November 2, 1944 — September 1, 2022

Cornwall

Susan B. (Yost) Bergner, 77, Cornwall, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2022 at PennState Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.  She had been a resident of Cornwall Manor for the last seven years.

Born November 2, 1944 in Collegeville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Calvin D. and Elizabeth C. (Schofield) Yost and was a graduate of Collegeville-Trappe High School.  Following graduation, she attended the family alma mater, Ursinus College and ultimately received her Master’s Degree from Goucher College.

On August 19, 1967, she married K. Roland Bergner, and worked several years as an elementary teacher at Penbrook Elementary School. After her first child, she left teaching to dedicate her life to caring for her family full time.  She remained a loving wife until Roland passed away in 2014.

Susan was a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, the Harrisburg Choral Society, White Ironstone China Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Schuylkill County Conservancy, Manada Conservancy, and the Transferware Collector’s Club.  She enjoyed spending time antiquing and collecting darners, white ironstone, and transferware.  Blessed with a creative spirit, she also loved singing, writing, and drawing and painting.  In her younger adult years she was a member of a local bowling league and often played Pinochle in the neighborhood women's card club and board games with friends.   She and Roland were avid bird watchers, and would document all the different birds which visited their feeder.   A Philadelphia sports fanatic, she was always cheering on the Phillies and the Eagles, as well as Penn State.  Although she didn’t ride, from a young age she loved horses.  She enjoyed collecting horse art, toys and figurines, drawing and painting them, and watching horse races, especially the Kentucky Derby, which she never missed.

Mostly, Susan was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who was a good listener and always chose to see the positive side of all that life would bring.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister: Elizabeth “Betsy” Mulliken.

Surviving are her children:  Ellen E., wife of Steven F. Miller, of Harrisburg; Margaret (Meg) K., wife of Joshua D. Carter, of Libertyville, IL, Anton W. Bergner, and partner Rick Alleman of Harrisburg, her sister:  Ellen Yost Matten (and William Matten); 4 grandchildren:  Paige and Olivia Miller, Calvin and Hayes Carter; her brother-in-law:  Jerry Mulliken; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, September 10, 2022 in her church, 4200 Londonderry Road, Harrisburg where there will be a visitation from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.
