William B. McCollum

September 23, 1931 — November 24, 2014

William B. McCollum, 83, of Susquehanna Township, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2014 at his home.

Born September 23, 1931 in Saxton, PA, he was the son of the late Esra and Margaret (Buckley) McCollum, and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and James McCollum; and sisters, Kathleen Smith, Peggy Fulk and Patricia Baker.  He was a 1951 graduate of John Harris High School; a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict; and was retired from William F. Rittner Company.

He was a long time member of Progress-Immanuel Presbyterian Church, the Progress Home Association and the American Legion Post 730, Penbrook.  He enjoyed doing outdoor maintenance for many people, fishing, golf, bowling and shooting pool; and was a softball coach and player.  He was extremely proud of his son, Coach Dave McCollum and his family, and was especially supportive of all high school sports teams. To many neighborhood ladies, he was a reliable handyman and chauffeur, driving them to and from appointments.  Always a hard worker, he was someone who would still take time to bring a smile to the face of anyone he knew.

Surviving is his loving wife, Gayle A. (Cramer) McCollum, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage today, November 27.  Also surviving is his son, David M. (and his wife, Jill) McCollum, Gardners; his brothers, Peter (and his wife, Helen) McCollum, Harrisburg and Paul McCollum, Marysville; his sister, Anna Mary Rimby, Trumbull, CT; 3 grandchildren, Lindsay McCollum, Matthew McCollum and Shaina McCollum, and many nieces and nephews.  He will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and neighbors, especially Michele Olson.

Services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, November 28, 2014 in his church, 3640 Ash Street, Harrisburg, 17109 with the Rev. Dr. Kenton Carter, his pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.  There will be a viewing Friday at the church from 1:00 pm until 2:00.

Contributions in his memory may be made to his church or to Heartland Hospice, 1200 Walnut Bottom Road, Suite 302, Carlisle, 17015, who took such loving care of him for so long.
