Following one last demonstration of her well-known willfullness (some would say stubbornness), Sarah Collins (Sally) Stevens, 85, obeyed the call and went home to be with the Lord on March 28, 2021. She was surrounded by her immediate family, just as she was lifted in spirit and in prayers by family and friends who loved her, both near and far.
Born in Harrisburg on January 16, 1936, Sarah was the middle daughter of the late Delphin Dick (DD) Collins and Anna Margaret (Peggy/Nana) Floyd Collins.
She is survived by older sister Sylvia Stone (Charles) of Mechanicsburg, younger sister Lois Bliss of Palmyra, and baby brother Richard Collins (Martha) of Harrisburg; Sarah was predeceased by a second brother Delphin Eugene (Skip) Collins.
She leaves behind two daughters, Debbie Reindollar (Skip) of Derwood, MD, and Beth Giovanniello (David) of Harrisburg, a son Scott Stevens (Lynne) of Inver Grove Heights, MN, 8 granddaughters (Rachel, Brooke, Cortney, Nicole, Kristina, Emily, Becca and Abby), 5 great- grandchildren (Will, Hunter, Gavin, Luke and Elliana), and 6 grand-dogs, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will all dearly miss her. She also leaves behind ex-husband Donald (Donnie) Stevens and in-laws with whom she was blessed to have a lifelong friendship.
Sarah was a devoted daughter, loving mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother, extraordinary aunt, and loyal friend.
A 1953 graduate of John Harris High School, Sarah retired from her position as a Tax Examiner with the PA Department of Revenue in 2002, after 30 years of service. It was then that she started her second career as a full-time grandma. A diehard football fan, she proudly displayed the flag of her favorite team, the Minnesota Vikings... in and outside her home, in her car, and on her clothing. When she wasn’t rooting for her Vikings, you might find her making Halloween costumes, working in her garden, or planning her next trip to see her granddaughters. Sarah was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg from early childhood and later of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, where she was a standout soprano in the church choir. The church—and her faith--were central to her life. In addition to singing, she played the organ and served as deacon, soloist, liturgist, and Sunday school teacher.
Those of us who are left behind to mourn our loss can find solace in the fact that Sarah’s body is no longer failing her. She is at peace and reunited with her earthly parents and her Heavenly Father. And the good Lord has added another angel to His celestial chorus.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1st, 2021 at 11:00am at Shiremanstown United Methodist Church (125 E Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011). A reception at the church will follow immediately afterwards.
