Robert M. Shaeffer, 87, Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Arden Courts of Susquehanna.
Born October 15, 1933 in Manheim, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Mary C. (Swenson) Shaeffer. Bob was a graduate of John Harris High School, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching from Shippensburg State Teacher’s College. He taught Business and Accounting at the High School level in Jeffersonville, NY, Downingtown, and Susquehanna Township School District.
Following his teaching career, he ultimately retired from Doubleday Publishing Company as a Regional Sales Manager.
In September of 1957, he married the love of his life, Sandra Lee (Bower), and celebrated over 59 years of marriage before Sandy passed away in 2016.
He attended Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hummelstown and was a member of the National Guard. He was a member of Perseverance Masonic Lodge #21, F&AM; Harrisburg Consistory; and was a former member of the West Hanover Lions Club. Bob was an avid baseball fan, especially the New York Yankees. He was deeply involved in local baseball and softball leagues; was past president of the West Hanover Baseball Association where he also coached; and was a longtime member of the PIAA Officials, umpiring High School Baseball and Softball games and Legion and Twilight leagues. As a member of the Board of Directors for Central Dauphin School District, he had the honor of handing diplomas to his own three children. He was also on the Board of Directors at Dauphin County Vo-Tech School.
Bob and Sandy enjoyed spending their winters in Hilton Head every year and gathering with the family at their cabin in Centre County. He was a hardworking man who instilled a phenomenal work ethic in his children and could often be found working on building projects with his good friend, FJ Howley.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob joins in Heaven his infant daughter, Holly; two grandchildren: John Marlin Kline and Caitlin Elizabeth Shaeffer; and two great grandchildren: Wyatt Fleisher and Luke Fleisher.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Deanna (and her husband, Micheal) Hamilton, Dauphin and Tracey (and her husband, Joe) Spogli, Mechanicsburg; one son: Scott M. (and his wife, Liz) Shaeffer, Harrisburg; his brother: Donald E. (and his wife, Helli) Shaeffer, Oregon; 7 grandchildren: Ashlee (and her husband, Joel) Folkemer, Mallory (and her husband, Wes) Fleisher, Lauren (and her husband, Scott) Roland, Ryan Shaeffer, Brooke Shaeffer, Laura Shaeffer, and Ethan Sgrignoli; 5 great grandchildren: Jacob Folkemer, Allyson Folkemer, Fallyn Fleisher and Jackson Fleisher and Rhys Fleisher, and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Bob and Sandy were proud of their own foundation and their granddaughter’s Memorial Fund, so in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either.
