Michael P. McHale

Michael P. McHale, 64, of Swatara Township, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Harrisburg Hospital, surrounded by his devoted wife and family. Born on January 11, 1962, in Harrisburg, Mike was the cherished son of the late Peter J. McHale, Sr. and the late Suzanne J. (Porter) McHale. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Peter, Jr. and Daniel.

A 1980 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School, Mike worked from a young age, beginning at just 14 years old in various roles—from food service positions at Colonial Country Club and Amity Hall, to laboring with Bailey’s Landscaping, to working on the production line at Reese’s candy. He later served as service manager at Sears Lawn and Garden and as a bus driver for Central Dauphin High School before dedicating himself to Capital Area Transit as both a driver and driver trainer.

Though unable to join the military as he had hoped, Mike followed in the footsteps of his big brother by embracing firefighting. At 18, he joined Paxtonia Fire Company #34, where he made the firehouse his home and eventually became a life member. Known for his fearless spirit, Mike drove every apparatus and held many leadership roles, including Deputy Chief, Captain, and Lieutenant. His commitment to the fire company showcased his deep dedication to service and brotherhood.

Raised in the Catholic faith at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Mike found renewed spiritual strength through the support of his wife, Nat, and his cousin, Msgr. Eddie LaVelle. Outside of his professional and community life, Mike enjoyed cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Orioles, and Penn State. In his younger days, he loved fishing in Florida with the Baileys and watching NASCAR. With a background in landscaping, he took pride in tending his yard, and he amassed an impressive collection of classic rock records and DVDs, rivaling any store’s inventory.

Above all, Mike treasured his family, friends, and the bonds forged with his fire station brothers. He carried a playful glimmer in his eyes—sometimes mischievous, always loving—and was quick-witted with a ready comeback, yet never hesitated to lend a helping hand or make a new friend.

Mike is lovingly survived by his wife (and companion of more than 20 years), Natalie D. (Page) McHale, whom he married on April 28, 2017 despite his earlier jest of being a confirmed bachelor. Also left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Amanda J. Ryan, and her husband, Sean; his brother, John M. McHale, and wife Deb; his sister, Sharon McHale-Cowher, and husband Michael; two grandchildren, Cheyenne Griffin and Barrett Ryan; and his faithful companion, his dog Regan. Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends will also miss him dearly.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Paxtonia Fire Company, located at 125 S Johnson St., Harrisburg, PA. This gathering will be a casual opportunity to share food, stories, and memories of a truly remarkable man.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Mike’s honor to support awareness and assistance for those affected by Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia — battles Mike bravely faced. His legacy will remind others that no one walks these journeys alone.

Arrangements are entrusted to Kimmel Funeral Home, Harrisburg.

The love and remembrance of Michael P. McHale will forever remain in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.
