Gary Aaron Smart, Jr., born on June 14, 1968, passed away on July 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, vibrant living, and unwavering support for those around him.

Gary’s journey began in the heart of New York, where he received his education at Hempstead High School. Those early years laid the foundation for the incredible work ethic and practical wisdom that would define his career and his presence in the lives of many.

For over 35 years, Gary devoted himself to construction, specializing in duct work and becoming a proud member of the Local 28 Union. His expertise and handiwork even contributed to the storied halls of Grand Central Station—testament to his skills, perseverance, and pride in his trade. To colleagues and friends alike, Gary was always more than just a coworker; he was a teacher, a mentor, and a steadfast supporter. Whether lending a hand to a new apprentice or offering words of encouragement to a friend facing a tough day, Gary’s helpful nature shone brightly in the workplace and beyond.

Outside of his professional life, Gary was a man who truly cherished living. He found exhilaration in riding his bike with friends, savoring the simple freedom and adventure it brought him. He also brought an infectious enthusiasm to every aspect of his life, from shopping for items to enhance his beloved home to seeking out new ways to embrace each day with fresh excitement.

Gary’s zest for life extended into his love for community. He was always deeply committed to those around him, often being the person everyone turned to in moments of uncertainty—not necessarily for the right words, but for his reassuring presence and instinct to act. His affection for his family and friends was unwavering, and they in turn leaned on his steadfastness through countless moments, both joyful and difficult.

Having retired after a distinguished career, Gary achieved one of his proudest milestones—the purchase of his own home. This house was not just a structure; it was a testament to his hard work and determination, a sanctuary where he found profound peace. After moving to Pennsylvania, Gary discovered new joys: the beauty of nature, the cheerful presence of birds, and the simple pleasure of tending to his garden and flowers. The slower pace and the tranquility of Pennsylvanian life offered him new perspectives, allowing him to appreciate a side of life far different from the bustle of New York City.

Gary will be dearly missed by his family. His mother Elayne Haygood, his sister Shawna Smart-Lorelike, and his brother David Smart. As well as his cherished wife, Gloria Ortiz-Smart, and his beloved daughters and son Mariah, Maya & Gary Smart. Their lives, forever enriched by his presence, will continue to honor his memory through the values he instilled and the love he so generously gave.

Family, friends, colleagues, and those whose lives he touched are invited to honor and remember Gary’s life at a visitation on July 30, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at W. Orville Kimmel Funeral Home, Inc., 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17103. A funeral service will follow at the same location, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
