David W. Downey, 75, of Swatara Township, passed away suddenly at his home on December 7, 2023.

Born on May 27, 1948, in Harrisburg, David was the son of the late Francis H. Downey, Sr. and Thelma (Cook) Downey, and was also preceded in death by his sister, Victoria Downey.

David obtained his education at Central Dauphin East High School, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. Following in his father’s footsteps of military service, he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and served his country with unwavering dedication for over 23 years. David's patriotism shone through as he was mobilized numerous times during national disasters, exemplifying his commitment to protect others.  During his time in the National Guard, he was educated in what was to become his career  as a surveyor from Hartman and Associates, from where he ultimately retired.

He was a 60 plus year member of Paxton Presbyterian Church; a life member of the NRA; a life member of the Lawnton American Legion Post #998; a member of the 40-8 Club; and a member of Perseverance Lodge #21, F&AM.

A man of many interests, David's hobbies reflected his adventurous spirit. When he wasn't busy with his profession or serving in the military, David found joy in indulging in his passion for cars. Among his cherished vehicles were the iconic 69 Roadrunner and a recently acquired Camaro. Additionally, David garnered quite a reputation as an avid gun collector—his knowledge and love for firearms were unmatched.

Beyond his professional life, David possessed a zestful personality that endeared him to everyone he encountered. Known for his sarcastic wit and childish sense of humor, he delighted in playing pranks and engaging in friendly debates with anyone on any topic.

He will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, including his sisters: Carol Himmelright and Jeanne Fortino (and her husband, John), and his brothers: Francis "Cork" Downey Jr (and his wife Josie) and Scott Downey (and his wife, Irene):  and his nieces: Tambrey Strickland,  Carole Jo "CJ" O'Keefe (and her husband, Bryan), Michelina "Mikey" McAnulty, Abigail Fortino (and Brian Ostella), Nicole Holcomb (and her husband, Donnie), and Shannon Donnelly (and her husband, Rich), and their respective families. Their shared memories will forever remain cherished treasures in their hearts.

Funeral services with the Rev. Kent Carter officiating will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg where there will be a viewing from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm.
